The Consulate Notes

While Russian visa policy is guided by legislation drafted and passed in Russia, each consulate is given free reign to interpret the laws, apply the laws as they see fit, and supplement the laws with their own policies and edicts.

Here are some quick notes on what our and our client's experience and research have indicated is the best way to approach and deal with certain consulates.

China: Shanghai is the easiest to deal with.

Europe: EU citizens can apply for visas in any EU consulate. Thus, those that can be sticklers for receiving the originals of documents or are otherwise known for poor service or for asking for extra documents can be avoided fairly easily.

Sweden: The consulate in Stockholm may ask for ridiculous amounts of documentation. Probably better to avoid this consulate if possible.

France: Paris is known for issuing tourist visas only if the hotel is fully prepaid. They also issue tourist visas for only 10 days. As for business visas they will ask for originals of business invitations.

Great Britain: When applying for a business visa in London be ready to provide a letter from your British employer. (The same is for the Russian Consulate in Vienna, Austria).

Hungary: The consulate in Budapest will ask for real booking confirmation.

Malta: Same as Budapest, booking confirmation required here.

Bulgaria: The consulate in Sofia doesn't issue visas upon individual application there. You'll need to try a visa agency.

New Zealand: For a tourist visa they will ask for confirmation of a paid hotel booking and payment confirmation must be issued by the inviting organization.

The United States: The Consulate in Washington DC is by far the easiest to work with. New York is ok so long as you are using an experienced agency. Avoid San Fran and Seattle if possible.

Effective July 1, 2011, all applications for russian visas submitted in the United States should be prepared using the electronic visa application form which is a web-based application, available online at http://evisa.kdmid.ru. Russian visa applications prepared using the old format or in a different way will not be accepted after July 1, 2011.

All these and many more issues that may arise depending on each consulate can be circumvented by using our full service visa package.
